<image:title>Home - What are your Blood Debts?</image:title>
<image:caption>It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, everyone has debts. Whether those debts are gifts or expected to be paid back, debt has a profound impact on people’s lives. In this series, we explore what it means to have blood debts through the lens of Filipinos in the diaspora. In the Filipino culture, debt or “utang” adds another layer that often cuts deeper and drives decisions that impact generations. With each story, you’ll walk away with things you never thought about when it comes to the debts we pay back and pay forward.</image:caption>

Jobs range from scavenging for recyclable materials to driving bike taxis. The average family income with these jobs is $5 USD/day. Financial constraints, as well as a lack of educational and social support, mean that many children are unable to complete their education, and in turn, are unable to break the cycle of poverty. Young Focus runs a preschool to ensure children aged 3 – 5 have access to early education and care. This is combined with training for their parents in health, nutrition, hygiene and parenting skills. Young Focus works with children aged 5 – 20 to make sure they are enrolled in schools and colleges, also providing after-school learning support. For those who have dropped out of school there are education programs to prepare children for re-enrollment. <image:caption>IT ALL STARTED WHEN… In 2015, our founder, together with other entrepinays, gathered at a Los Angeles coffee shop to commiserate and celebrate the entrepreneurial journey. We realized quickly how much we needed this safe space to share our struggles and victories as we navigate everything in business from cash flow to work/life balance to that occasional feeling of self-doubt. This wasn’t an event for awkward networking or to crush each other’s dreams, but a refuge for the journey that often feels lonely. NOW… The vision for Entrepinayship is to elevate Filipina founders, creatives, and visionaries through community, connections, and resources at all stages of the entrepreneurial journey. We believe in the power of the collective and the value of “kapwa.” We know we can accomplish more together. We also know existing gaps in our community. We address challenges like access to funding and best practices in management, mentorship for growth, and personal & leadership development. We want you to thrive and when you do, our community does too! We look forward to connecting with and serving you!</image:caption>

<image:title>Samantha Tillapaugh - The Debtist</image:title>
<image:caption>Samantha Tillapaugh is a debtist – a dentist who graduated with a lot of student debt. After four years of undergrad and four years of dental school, she ended up with a debt of over $550k, which I then had to start paying back. This led Samantha to a series of life changes and discoveries about herself in her late twenties that shaped her lifestyle into what it is today. Saving money required her to be more frugal, and being more frugal opened up the doors to finding alternative ways to find happiness in things that don’t require consumerism.</image:caption>

<image:title>Samantha Tillapaugh - Biography</image:title>
<image:caption>Samantha Tillapaugh is known as TheDebtist, for having accrued over half a million dollars of student debt in order to get her dental degree. Rather than waiting 25 years for loan forgiveness, she is one of the few who chooses to pay it back aggressively in order to reach financial independence sooner. She writes on her blog about how she manages her debt by implementing a number of intentional lifestyle choices, including slow living, minimalism, and frugality. She created a course on Mastering a Budget in the hopes of helping others manage money better. She published the 75-page course for free on her site so that it would be accessible to all. She has been featured on ChooseFI as well as on Student Loan Planner. Her goal is to not let the student debt deprive her of her life now, as well as her life later. Samantha was born in Quezon City, Philippines and moved to the United States in 1998. Her parents wanted her to pursue the American Dream, but the accumulation of status symbols and wealth symbols turned her away from the glamour of the West Coast, and back towards her roots and the qualities of a simpler life. Her ideal day in the life consists of doing a few yoga stretches as soon as she gets up, making a cup of pour-over coffee in the morning, writing on her site until lunchtime, reading books in the afternoon, and cuddling her adopted (once-homeless) toothless cat, Theodore in the evening.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tiffany Baker - Biography</image:title>
<image:caption>Tiffany Baker, is a Chicago-born, Brooklyn-based visual artist, working in oil, acrylic, pencil, and digital media. Tiffany has developed a unique style of realist portraiture. Marked by vibrant palettes and considered attention to her subject's grooming, she merges the somber, the regal and the mundane, bringing forth her subject's intensity. In her portraiture, Tiffany turns life experiences into emotive visual expressions that re-imagine trauma, embed messages of connection and celebrate her identity as a black woman. Tiffany has shown in solo exhibitions in Brooklyn since 2016 including “Smilehood and Other Stories, (2016), “Heritage (2017), Light Beings (2018) and the group show “The Armor of Saul" by Unjaded Curations (2019). She was a featured artist at the Arizona Hip Hop Festival, Phoenix, AZ (2019). Tiffany was a top 25 finalist for Ideo’s 2019 Cybersecurity Visuals Challenge (2019). Tiffany is one of 40 artists commissioned by UHill Walls to create one of the largest collections of murals on a 15-acre site in Durham North Carolina (Sept 2020). Tiffany’s work is currently being shown in an international group exhibition, “Ain’t No Time To Hate” in Liverpool with the eponymous Anthony Walker Foundation promoting it’s message of social harmony and anti-hate, created after the racially motivated murder of Anthony Walker. Tiffany’s art can also be spotted in the Clinton Hill and Fort Greene neighborhoods on two community fridges for mutual aid initiatives aimed at fighting food insecurity in the local Brooklyn community. Tiffany’s illustrations can be viewed on Vh1’s Black Girl Beauty, a six-episode series which aired weekly. She has spent the last seven years creating illustrative content as a Senior Interactive Designer with CNN. Baker holds a Bachelor of Industrial Design from Pratt Institute and has trained at School for Visual Arts and The New York Academy of Art.</image:caption>
